History

Block Island was named by Adriaen Block who was a Dutch explorer in the 1600's. Traveling on his ship he charted almost the whole New England coastline. When he arrived here, the island was populated by Indians.

In native Indian language, "Mohegan" means wolf.  The name of the Mohegan Bluffs comes from a battle between invading Mohegan Indians and the local Manises Indians. In 1590, the Manises drove a 40-man war party of Mohegans off the cliff to their deaths.  Thankfully, the patrons today are a little less hostile.

The Mohegans have had a rich culture and history with population that reached over 6,000 and currently have an enrollment near 1,000 with federal recognition in 1994.  Come celebrate the Mohegans at our Festival.

Mohegan Bash Details

Get aboard the summer’s hottest party at Block Island’s Mohegan Festival.  This event features fun people enjoying refreshing beverages at one of the east coast’s most scenic locations while listening to some of the northeast’s best live bands.  To summarize the feeling, it’s like showing up at one of those silly beer commercials.  The only difference is that you are actually part of the festivities, instead of watching it from your living room sofa.  Be a part of the action and join the fun this summer.

Where is all starts...

The Mohegan Bluffs of Block Island presents one of the most perfect beaches of not only Rhode Island, but the entire East Coast.  This beautiful beach has pristine sand. Pristine, that is, if you don’t count sand-washed pebbles, the occasional granite boulder, and a sand dollar or two.

The bluffs, reaching 17 stories overhead, receives the strongest part of the Atlantic Ocean's continual pounding of weather. The wind and rain and freezing and thawing drops huge pieces of land down to the beach, which the surf then washes away a little at a time. This unique situation made the beach which we enjoy. The huge granite boulders, "erratics", pushed here from the mainland during the Ice Age 22,000 years ago, remain well out in the surf, telling the story of where the land once was. Come out to this perfect setting and celebrate yesterday and today!
